The 'Pelican' Rainwater Diverter

Pelican model

Every year millions of litres of rainwater runs from Australian domestic and commercial roofs into the stormwater system. Meanwhile gardens are watered, clothes are washed and toilets are flushed with drinking water. By channeling downpipes to rainwater tanks, scheme water usage can be cut. This isn't a new idea, but rainwater tanks have always been susceptible to contamination.

While Trymak's excellent Frogmouth Filter provides a means of diverting filtered rainwater to storage tanks, handling overflow and backwash, I felt there was still opportunity for improvement.

While I increased the downpipe diameter to 90mm (for large and commercial premises) I followed a similar path to separate water from leaves. Similarly, backwash exits below the level of the clean water take-off. The 'Pelican', however has no moving parts.

To avoid the necessity for a hinged inspection cover (or losing a separate item) the moulded lids loop around the body at the time of installation.
